BUZUD Leads the Fight Against Undiagnosed Diabetes in Singapore
Published on:March 03 2025
With nearly 40% of diabetes cases in Singapore going undiagnosed, the nation faces a growing healthcare challenge. Diabetes, often referred to as a silent epidemic, can lead to severe complications if left untreated, including heart disease, kidney failure, and nerve damage. Recognising the urgency of this issue, BUZUD, a leader in healthcare innovation, has stepped up to make a significant impact. In collaboration with Diabetes Singapore, BUZUD has been at the forefront of this year’s World Diabetes Day (WDD) initiatives, providing free health screenings and education to thousands of Singaporeans.
The Growing Burden of Diabetes in Singapore
Diabetes is a major public health concern in Singapore, with the government projected to spend over S$1 billion annually on diabetes treatment by 2050 if current trends continue. Much of this burden stems from late diagnoses, which often occur only after complications have developed. Studies show that individuals with undiagnosed or late-diagnosed diabetes are at a higher risk of severe health issues, requiring costly and intensive long-term care. Early detection and preventive measures are critical to reducing these risks and improving outcomes.
BUZUD’s Comprehensive Health Screenings
As part of its efforts to combat undiagnosed diabetes, BUZUD partnered with Diabetes Singapore to conduct health screenings at various events across the island. Over the course of one month, these initiatives reached 20,000 people, with 2,500 individuals receiving free health screenings. These screenings went beyond standard HbA1c testing, offering participants the opportunity to measure their Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, lipid profile, and uric acid levels.
This comprehensive approach addresses the interconnected nature of health indicators such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and elevated uric acid levels, which are often linked to diabetes and overall metabolic health. By providing a more holistic screening experience, BUZUD and Diabetes Singapore emphasised the importance of early detection and management of these conditions to prevent complications and improve quality of life.
Guest of Honour and Key Highlights
The World Diabetes Day 2024 event was graced by Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State for the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and Ministry of Health (MOH), as the Guest of Honour. In her speech, Mdm Rahayu highlighted the significant impact of diabetes on both physical and emotional well-being. She noted that diabetes affects approximately one in 12 Singapore residents and emphasised the importance of early detection, regular screening, and proactive management to prevent complications and improve quality of life.
Mdm Rahayu also commended Diabetes Singapore and its partners, including BUZUD, for their efforts in raising awareness and providing accessible health screenings. She stressed the importance of community support and partnerships in creating a supportive ecosystem for individuals with diabetes, enabling them to take charge of their health. Her speech also touched on broader initiatives by the Ministry of Health, such as the Healthier SG programme, which encourages regular screenings and personalised health plans through family doctors.
Dr Bee Yong Mong, President of Diabetes Singapore, also attended the event and played a key role in supporting the organisation’s mission to combat diabetes. His presence underscored the importance of collaboration between healthcare organisations and technology providers in addressing the diabetes epidemic.
Revolutionising Diabetes Management with Technology
In addition to health screenings, BUZUD is transforming diabetes care through its innovative Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system and the BUZUD mobile application (BMA). The CGM is a wearable device that tracks blood glucose levels in real time, offering users a detailed understanding of how their bodies respond to food, physical activity, and medication. This technology empowers individuals to identify patterns and make informed adjustments to their lifestyle and treatment plans.
The integration of the BUZUD mobile app enhances the CGM’s functionality, providing users with several key features:
- Real-time alerts: Notifications are sent when glucose levels are out of range, reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia and enabling timely intervention.
- Dietary analysis: The app analyses the nutritional content of meals, helping users make healthier dietary choices while consolidating this data for better health management.
- Data sharing with healthcare providers: With patient consent, the CGM generates detailed reports that can be shared with healthcare providers, allowing for more personalised and effective treatment plans.
What sets BUZUD apart is its commitment to accessibility. Unlike competitors, BUZUD has waived all fees for using the BMA, ensuring that its solutions are available to a wider audience. This aligns with the company’s vision of making healthcare more inclusive and empowering individuals to take control of their health.
Community Engagement and Awareness
To raise awareness about diabetes and its innovative solutions, BUZUD actively participated in various community health events and World Diabetes Day activities. These events provided Singaporeans with the opportunity to see live demonstrations of the CGM and BMA, ask questions, and better understand how these tools can support effective diabetes management. By combining advanced technology with a community-focused approach, BUZUD is making a tangible impact on diabetes care in Singapore.
A Holistic Approach to Health
BUZUD’s efforts reflect a broader commitment to holistic health management. By addressing not only diabetes but also related conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol, BUZUD is promoting a more comprehensive approach to wellness. This aligns with the company’s mission to empower individuals to take charge of their health and prevent complications before they arise.
Paving the Way for a Healthier Future
As Singapore continues to grapple with the challenges posed by diabetes, BUZUD’s initiatives represent a vital step forward. Through early detection, innovative technology, and community engagement, BUZUD is helping to reduce the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and improve the lives of those affected by the condition. With its unwavering commitment to health access and awareness, BUZUD is paving the way for a healthier, more informed society.
